Beauty is subjective, as we all know. But surely there are limits.

This thought came to me recently when my daily mail included a sultry photo of actress Scarlett Johannson, wearing a dress that was doing everything it could to fall off her.

As it turned out, the image was attached to the November issue of Esquire magazine, which proclaimed Ms. Johannson “The Sexiest Woman Alive.”

Now, Scarlett Johannson is a decent enough actress, and she’s certainly not difficult on the eyes. But The Sexiest Woman Alive??

First, I just have to address the age factor.

Johannson is just short of 22 years old. Last year’s heir to the Esquire throne, Jessica Biel, was 23 at the time.

What, Lindsay Lohan and Jessica Simpson wouldn’t agree to photo layouts?

Perhaps you’ve heard of a novel named “Lolita,” in which a man becomes obsessed with a pubescent girl. Still a controversial book half-a-century later, the novel seems to have been meant, at the very least, a a cautionary tale. It certainly wasn’t intended as a guidebook.

Yet it appears that at some point, American males decided to pursue the world’s Lolitas without irony or guilt, and thus any woman over 25 can now be considered ancient.

Just one example is Mamie Van Doren, a curvy actress who was groomed to be another Marilyn Monroe in the 1950’s. At age 71, Ms. Van Doren appeared topless in the 2003 movie “Slackers,” and from the critics’ uproar, you’d have thought national security had been violated.

There’s a place in this world for youthful beauty, as there always was. But is it possible that a woman with age, knowledge, and experience can still be considered attractive – perhaps because of (rather than in spite of) a few extra wrinkles and pounds?

There is some hope, though, and it’s provided by none other than the famously voluptuous Sophia Loren. At age 71, Ms. Loren has posed for next year’s edition of the famous Pirelli calendar. Rumor has it that she posed sans clothing.

I don’t intend to make any tacky comments here, though it would not pain me to see Ms. Loren in the buff. But at least, it’s comforting to find that there are still people who can consider an older female one of the sexiest women alive.

I completely agree with the caption for this picture - Scarlett Johansson IS the sexiest woman alive. As a friend of mine once said: “Most good-looking women are either pretty or sexy - and she’s both”

She is the perfect woman, and I challenge anyone to post here the name of a sexier, prettier woman.

She is curvy - definitely not too skinny. I like Keira Knightley and Lindsay Lohan but they are way too skinny. Scarlett is nice and curvy.

She has boobs without being the size of Jordan - which personally I find disgusting.

She has beautiful legs and her eyes are seductive and I bet you there is not one man that wouldn’t kill to spend a night with her - and there’s probably a few women, too.

I would only love to see a proper picture of her that has not been faked as I find them degrading.
